I've seen a tendency for people to act like twitter was the only place to share their stuff, and that cohost somehow doesn't do that. this has always been nonsense, but especially now.

share your stuff! share your art and writing! share podcasts you're working on or speaking in! share streams you're doing! show us your stuff darnit!

and if you're not doing any of that, like. my first post was just "egg"

just post

a couple comments I got on the first bit of this chain made it clear that twitter's caused a bit of brain poison, which is understandable. that's what it was designed to do!

long-ass bullet points thingy full of mostly probably obvious stuff
  • people who like you, your stuff, or stuff you boost, may follow you
  • sometimes people follow you because you boosted or liked their stuff!
  • I've seen a massive increase in cool art and writing and such to enjoy and boost from people lately, and it's because more posts are happening.
  • if you depend on attention to live because you're an artist, you literally need to just post and like posts and boost posts.
  • if you treat this place as disposable and barely touch it, people here will forget you exist
  • none of this is that different from how any other "social media" site works in these regards. none of this is different from how you started out on any other website.
  • there is no algorithm here, there is no ad system. from what I gather from @staff, there never will be. I consider this a very good thing! the ad-funded internet is a plague and is actively making our lives worse.
  • (something like Tumblr's "Blaze" feature (posting a post of yours randomly to 1000 people) would be funny but probably isn't something we want tbh)
  • tags are good because they both let people see posts they want to through tag search, and allow people to approach stuff they're sensitive to with caution. however, not a lot of people are aware tag searching exists, yet!

short version: your "discoverability" is a social issue more than a tech one here. people who like certain things should search tags more often. people who like what a given person is doing on here should follow them. honestly I don't even think about "discoverability" and just typing it out feels like it's filling my mouth with bitter cotton, ugh

do what comes naturally, have fun here, and stop letting places like twitter make you insist that every second of your time on A Website™ needs to be a job and a chore. enjoy yourself more!
